What should be done if a generator set fails to produce electricity?

As power generation equipment, generator sets serve as either primary or backup power sources, playing a critical role during critical moments. If a generator set malfunctions and fails to generate electricity at a crucial time, it loses its intended function. When a generator set fails to produce electricity, the cause must be promptly identified and the fault rectified.

Causes of Diesel Generator Set Failure to Generate Electricity

1. Frequent loss of residual magnetism after shutdown occurs because the material used for the exciter poles is close to soft steel, resulting in low residual magnetism. When no current flows through the excitation winding after shutdown, the magnetic field disappears.

2. Loss of magnetism in the generator set's poles.

3. Damage to excitation circuit components or open circuits, short circuits, or ground faults in the wiring.

4. Poor contact between the exciter brushes and commutator, or insufficient brush holder pressure.

5. Incorrect wiring of the excitation winding, resulting in reversed polarity.

6. Poor contact between the generator brushes and slip rings, or insufficient brush pressure.

7. Open circuit in the generator set's stator winding or rotor winding.

8. Loose wiring of the lead-out cables or poor switch contact.

9. Blown fuse.

Troubleshooting Methods for Generator Set Failure to Generate Electricity

1. For standby batteries, magnetize them before generating electricity.

2. Magnetize by applying a direct current greater than the rated current (for a very short duration) through the windings; the specific current is determined by testing.

3. Replace damaged components and repair faulty circuits.

4. Clean sharp deposits from contact surfaces, adjust brush pressure, and tighten brush holders.

5. Correct wiring connections and magnetize according to proper polarity.

6. Remove sharp deposits from contact surfaces, grind brushes, adjust brush pressure, and ensure tight contact between brushes and slip rings.

7. Inspect and repair open circuits.

8. Securely reconnect terminals or repair switch contact points.

9. Determine the cause of fuse blowout. After confirming normal generator and circuit conditions, replace with specified fuse.

Due to various factors, generator sets are bound to encounter malfunctions during operation. The key is to promptly identify the cause and resolve the issue.
